In this letter, the apostle Peter writes to Christians that were scattered all throughout because of persecution. He writes them to encourage them in the midst of that persecution. And he reminds them in various ways that they are different from the world around them, because they are citizens of a different country (Heaven). Because of this truth, people should be able to look at their lives and tell that they’re “Different.”
1 Peter 1:1-12 — A Different Faith in Trials
As he begins the letter, we see Peter writing a letter to encourage Christians to be different in this world, because we are citizens of a different kingdom. And the first area he says that we are different in is our faith in the midst of hardships.
1 Peter 1:13-21 — A Different Value System
In this passage, Peter tell us that we are to live holy just as God is holy. This is a value system contrary to the world. The world’s value system revolves around one’s own happiness. As Christians, we are called to live, not according to our own happiness, but according to God’s holiness.
1 Peter 1:22-2:3 — A Different Soul Diet
Next, we see Peter transition to the thought of God’s Word and its effect on our life. It has brought us the gospel that saved us, but it can also grow us! But our spiritual growth is directly proportional to our desire. Are we craving the junk food of the world, or the nutrition of the Word?
1 Peter 2:4-10 — A Different Identity
In this passage, Peter points to who Jesus is and how, as a result of being His followers, we have an identity and purpose that is rooted in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:11-3:12 — A Different Relationship Dynamic
Peter says that our lifestyle can impact unbelievers in a way that would bring them to glorifying God! And he connects that thought to the way we conduct our relationships in society, the workplace, the family, and the church. As Christians, we are to relate to others in humble submission.
1 Peter 3:13-4:19 — A Different Perspective
Peter goes on to tell us that we should view persecution as a normal blessing of living the Christian life. How is that even possible? It’s all about our perspective! As we live for what is good and righteous, think on the victory that we have in Christ through the gospel, and focus on the eternity that is awaiting us, then no matter the results of this life, even if its suffering and persecution, we can rest in the sovereignty and care of our Savior!
1 Peter 5:1-14 — A Different Struggle
As Peter closes out his letter, he gives some insight into the organizational structure of the church. And he really hones in on the spirit of humility being a part of all those in the church, even those in leadership! In this message, we are challenged, not to struggle for power, but to struggle against our pride, and live in humility and submission.
We hope that this series has helped you to see that you are different from the world, because you belong to a different kingdom. And we pray it has challenged you to be more like Jesus!
