The prophet Habakkuk is a lot like us! When we look at the world, the evil all around, and then at the way the Bible describes God to be, it can leave us asking questions. Hard questions! Questions about who God is and what He does. But the Lord reassures Habakkuk of who He is and how He works, and it causes Habakkuk’s faith to grow. Through this series, we evaluate these hard questions and apply them to our faith journey as well!
Habakkuk 1:1-11 — Is God Indifferent?
The theme and metaphor of being in the wilderness speaks to seasons of life where we feel lost, alone, and floundering. And yet, even in these moments, God is with us. We can hold onto His In this message, we see the prophet Habakkuk coming to the Lord with questions. Questions about the state of Judah and why it seems that God doesn’t care and won’t intervene. But he gets a response from God to show him that the Lord is not indifferent to the sin taking place in Judah. In fact, He has been working behind the scenes to judge His people for their sin.. We can trust in His provision. And we can rest in His presence.
Habakkuk 1:12-17 — Is God Inconsistent?
In this passage, we see the prophet Habakkuk coming to the Lord with MORE questions! God has given him the details of His plan for judging Judah’s sin, but Habakkuk doesn’t really like that plan. What we see is really at play in Habakkuk’s mind is that who He believes God to be and how he sees God working do not seem to match up in his eyes. In this message, we are challenged to cling to who God is when we don’t understand what He is doing.
Habakkuk 2:1-20 — Is God in Control?
In this passage, we see Habakkuk sit back and wait for another reply from God toward his questions. He presumes that God will rebuke him, but instead, God directs him to write down the words He speaks as a woe to the Babylonians. However, in the words of God, we also see assurances to the believer of God’s sovereignty. And we conclude that though everything may seem destructive and chaotic around us, God is still on His throne, and we can trust Him!
Habakkuk 3:1-19 — What is my Faith in?
In this passage, we see Habakkuk now accepting God’s plan. He is no longer questioning and arguing, but praying and praising. And in the latter part of his words, he gives three statements of faith that can aid us in evaluating where we are placing our faith. Are we placing our faith in temporal things? Ourselves? Or are we placing our faith in God?
We pray that this sermon study has strengthened your faith in who God is and how He works. Even when we don’t fully understand, we can trust Him!
