Through the book of John, we find 7 statements from Jesus that begin with “I Am.” In this sermon series, we evaluate the context of each of these statements, what Jesus was saying, and how it applies to us today.

I Am The Bread of Life - John 6:22-69

In this message, we see Jesus confront many of His followers with the fact that they are only following Him for what He can give them, but not for He Himself. Then He tells them that He is the bread of life — He is truly what they are needing. As a result, many walk away. We are challenged to evaluate ourselves — will we receive the bread of life?

I Am The Light of the World - John 8:12-14

In this message, we see Jesus say that He is the light of the world. This statement has plenty of contextual and theological connotations. We key in on some practical implications of this statement that are humbling and challenging, but needed!

I Am The Door - John 10:7-10

In this message, we find that Jesus begins to use the analogy of shepherd and sheep. Through this teaching, He shows that He is the shepherd. Specifically, He says “I am the door of the sheep.” We see this applied to our lives in showing that we are protected, free, nourished, and refreshed.

I Am The Good Shepherd - John 10:10-18

In this message, we see Jesus continuing His conversation on Him being a shepherd. And specifically, we see Him say “I am the Good Shepherd” in contrast to the Pharisees who were being bad shepherds. We are encouraged by the care and concern that Jesus gives us as our Shepherd, and challenged to respond in trust as we follow Him.

I Am The Resurrection - John 11:1-52

In this message, we see Jesus called to the home of some of His dear friends, due to Lazarus being sick. As He delays coming, Lazarus dies. But Jesus knew that He was going to resurrect Lazarus from the dead! Through this story, we are encouraged to believe in Jesus as the resurrection, who can take dead things, and bring them to life!

I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life - John 14:1-6

In this message, we see Jesus comforting His disciples in the midst of their doubts. Thomas asks a question based on what Jesus says. Jesus assures them that if they follow Him, they will make it home, because He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

I Am The True Vine - John 15:1-11

In this message, we see Jesus use imagery that is familiar to His disciples — both culturally and theologically. But Jesus turns the imagery on its head, and points to the fact that He is and does what we cannot be or do. We are challenged to abide in Him, the True Vine.

We pray that this series through the “I Am” statements of Christ in the book of John was enlightening to you, helps you relate to Jesus on a more personal level, and motivates you to live for Him!
