This sermon study walks through the book of Micah chapter by chapter. The people of God were in ruins and being oppressed even by their own leaders. The prophet Micah speaks to them about getting right with God and working to relate rightly to others as well. Through each sermon, we unpack what God tells us is “The Good Life.”
Introduction to The Book of Micah
Each prophet had a specific context of people, nations, and leaders to whom they were speaking. And each prophet falls into the timeline of Israel’s history in different ways as well. To understand the message of the prophet Micah, we need to understand all of the context surrounding his message and ministry.
Micah Chapter 1
Right at the beginning of Micah’s message, we see a pronouncement of judgment coming toward the people of God. He must judge the sin of Israel and Judah. But even though He declares judgment, we see His heart of mercy!
Micah Chapter 2
In this chapter, we see a continuation of the pronouncements of judgment on God’s people. But again, in the midst of these declarations, there is a proclamation of hope! God gives a promise that even though they are broken, He is sending one who will breakthrough FOR them!
Micah Chapter 3
As Micah continues, we see God confront the leadership of His people, and calls them out for their corruption and outright malevolence toward the people they are supposed to be leading. In the midst of this corruption, we see the prophet Micah stand up with boldness and lead in the power of the Spirit, declaring what God has said to the fallen leadership.
Micah Chapter 4
In this section, there’s a shift in Micah’s message. It changes from a message of predominantly warnings and judgment proclamations to a message of hope and promise! And He gives them promises of peace, of a kingdom, and of redemption!
Micah Chapter 5
In this section, we see Micah predict the birthplace of the Messiah and give more hope to the people of God by declaring God’s promises to save, defend, and transform them through their Messiah King Jesus!
Micah Chapter 6:1-8
When Micah transitions to another thought, we enter the courtroom of God as He brings a dispute between Him and His people. He pleads with them, showing them how faithful and loving He has been to them. Yet, they still don’t truly understand His heart. They try to do more to appease Him, when all He is asking for is that they walk with Him humbly and let His goodness shine through them.
Micah Chapter 6:9-7:20
Micah concludes His message with a question that uses word play on his own name—Who is like our God? Of course we know that no one is like our God! As we travel through the passage, we learn some implications of this wonderful truth!
How Micah Connects to the Gospel
Every prophet has the truth of the gospel interwoven throughout their message. In this message, we see 3 questions we can see answered in every Old Testament book of a prophet. Through these three questions, we see the hope of the gospel all throughout!
We hope that this series overview of the book of Micah has been helpful to you in understanding the message he was giving to the nation of Judah. We also pray that it has encouraged and challenged you as you strive to “walk humbly with your God.”
